Situated in the five hundred kilometer stretch from Reggio Calabria to Salerno lies the major city of Lamezia Terme. This commune was legally created in the 1968 to envelope the former communes of Sambiase, Nicastro and Sant’Eufemia Lamezia. While very controversial at the time the general thinking was that collectively these communes would create a stronger economical unit. While this did provide for improve economical conditions, it was brought with it a downside – namely the increase in mafia power. Indeed the local administration was twice completely dismissed for alleged mafia connections.
Don’t however let this put you off visiting this beautiful region. There are many places to visits and lots of things to do. The highlights of which include:
· A castle built by Greek colonists
· The Bastion of the Knights of Malta watchtower
· The ruins of the Cistercian abbey of Santa Maria di Corazzo
· The Diocesan Museum holds an Arab-Norman ivory case from the 12th Century
We will of course be reviewing all of these, along with hotels and restaurants in the forthcoming months.
