Lamezia - Castle of Nicastro

The beautiful town of Lamezia is dominated by the historic Castle of Nicastro, a collection of enchanting ruins perched atop cliffs that rise to over 320 meters above sea level.  Its origins are still being argued over by historians, but it is thought that the original structure was built by either Greek or Norman invaders.  What is known is that it briefly housed Pope Callixtus II in 1122, and survived another 300 years before eventually succumbing to a series of powerful earthquakes in the 17^th and 18^th centuries.

Other than the impressive series of ruined walls, towers and courtyards, the climb to Nicastro castle also affords the visitor an unrivalled viewpoint from which too survey Lamezia and the surrounding area.  Occupying the highest points in the area, a more spectacular, historic, and impressive sight will be harder to find in the entire region, and no visit to Lamezia is complete without a climb to the castle of Nicastro.

Lamezia is a town by the sea and covers an immense coastline in the south of the country. Surrounded by white sands and unspoiled beaches both to the west (Tyrrhenian Sea) and to the east, there are few undiscovered places that can compare to its beauty.

Various ruins - castles, watchtowers and temples - that attest to its rich history still stand in town and are worth taking an excursion to. Located in the center of Calabria, it has an international airport and easy access to all the neighboring towns.  Stay in one of the local resorts and head out to experience the rest of the area, from the forests and lakes in the mountains up north or the other interesting cities nearby.

The beachfront is, of course, the most interesting destination for tourists.  With glimmering beaches and breathtaking rock formations, you’ll be enthralled by your mere presence in the area.  With the party atmosphere that permeates the town on summers and weekends, there’s nary a time wasted while you regale in its wanton splendor.
